Not surprisingly, some Boeing officials are questioning the global supply chain that has not performed as well as had been expected. Vice President Mike Bair, Boeing's former 787 chief suggested that for the next aircraft Boeing may discontinue the global supply chain and replace it with a so-called "super-site" where all major partner manufacturers would be expected to congregate. Since Bair said that this new super-site could be outside Washington State, he is setting up a pitched battle among aerospace states. In any event, whether the next plane is built in Washington or Georgia suppliers at the second tier and below will be busy providing equipment and services. The same is true in Europe. U.S. suppliers have never had a better shot at snagging subcontracted work from European OEMs than right now.

Over the next ten years, India is planning to build 500 new "mega-airports" with 6 regional airports planned for 2008. The government is looking for entrepreneurs and to joint public-private projects for what it calls "merchant airports" – which may mean development well beyond the airport itself. This is exciting news from India where air travel is growing at a torrid pace. With India as the "Partner Country," we will look to learning more about this massive development at the Berlin International Air Show.
